BOUTIQUE HOPPING AND TRENDY FINDS
Johnny Cupcakes on Martha’s Vineyard
Despite its sweet sounding name, Johnny Cupcakes does not sell baked goods, but rather a wide range of clothing and accessories that feature the company’s now famous colorful cupcake and crossbones logo. Johnny Cupcakes was started locally in Hull ten years ago, by “college dropout” Johnny Earle. Since opening his first shop in his hometown of Hull in 2005, Earle has expanded the business exponentially, opening Johnny Cupcakes “bakery” locations on Newbury Street in Boston, Los Angeles and London, and acquiring a loyal following of customers from around the world in the process.
The idea for Johnny Cupcakes began as a joke. While working at the Braintree Newbury Comics store in 2000, Earle’s co-workers would give him a new nickname daily. One day, “Johnny Cupcakes” stuck. Earle decided to order t-shirts for his metal band “On Broken Wings” with the “Johnny Cupcakes” nickname displayed on the front. He began wearing the t-shirts to work and started to have many inquiries about the origins of the design. Soon after, Earle began selling t-shirts out of the back of his ’89 Camry, and later while on tour with his band. Before long, the Johnny Cupcakes business was booming and in 2008 Earle was named America’s #1 Young Entrepreneur by Businessweek Magazine.
On Saturday, June 16th, the newest Johnny Cupcakes location will open on Martha’s Vineyard, a place that is close to Earle’s heart because it was where his parents met and where his family often spent their summers. Coinciding with the opening, there will be a release of a whole new line of custom t-shirts that integrate Martha’s Vineyard culture and landmarks into the t-shirt designs.
To join the party, visit the new faux-bakery on June 16th at 2 p.m., 45 Circuit Avenue, Oak Bluffs, Martha’s Vineyard. www.johnnycupcakes.com.
