Big Tent Anniversary

The South Shore Music Circus Celebrates 60 Years

The South Shore Music Circus, together with its sister venue the Cape Cod Melody Tent, is one of the last two continuously-operated tent theatres-in-the-round in the United States. Both venues are owned and operated by the non-profit South Shore Playhouse Associates.
The Music Circus presented its first show — a performance of Show Boat, on June 25, 1951 on scenic Cohasset land that once was home to horse stables. The new tent theater was a huge hit, attracting famous acts and sell-out crowds. Tickets for that first season sold for $1.20 to $3.60 for the evening performances and $1.20 to $3.00 for the matinee on Thursday.
The venue has been an integral part of the South Shore culture ever since, having featured a wide range of musical and theatrical acts, from Ginger Rogers, Angela Lansbury, and Bob Hope, to The Beach Boys, Bill Cosby, and Huey Lewis and The News. These days, the Music Circus features a state-of-the art vinyl tent and modern sound and light systems — but the magic remains. For more info and tickets, visit www.themusiccircus.org.
