EXPLORING THE SOUTH SHORE ONE BITE AT A TIME
A sweet gem in Hull
Visiting the shopping district in the Kenberma section of Hull is like walking into a 1960s snapshot. On this short strip of Nantasket Avenue, a supermarket, a pizza parlor, a diner, a gas station and a dry cleaner front a sidewalk made for strolling in flip-flops, while savoring a treat or a fast-melting ice cream. To procure your snack, or even a meal, visit Weinberg’s Bakery & Café, a storefront eatery doing business as a bakery, sandwich shop and pizza parlor. In season, you can also get gelato.
Weinbergs starts the day right, offering over a dozen varieties of on-the-premises-baked bagels, 10+ blends of coffee, and with a nod to today’s tastes, lattes, espressos, cappuccinos and flavored shots. If that doesn’t peak your interest, order a breakfast sandwich, or have a look behind the glass case. Prepare to drool over the mouthwatering display of fresh muffins and breakfast pastries. You’ll swallow hard at adjoining shelves, filled with oversized cannolis, cream puffs, Lobster Tails, Whoopie Pies, Half Moons, cupcakes, Éclairs and fruit tarts.
If pastries aren’t your thing, visit for lunch. Hebrew National Hot Dogs, spinach and ham croissants, Paninis, salads, soups and sandwich combos make for a comprehensive selection. Try from a blackboard list of creative sandwiches, which includes a Chicken salad (with apple, walnuts and cranberry sauce) a Mediterranean Wrap (Hummus, Greens, Lettuce, Tomato, Cucumber, Green Peppers, Red Peppers and Feta) and a grilled Rueben, among others.
In the off chance you still haven’t discovered something to entice you, stop in on a Friday or Saturday night, when Weinbergs makes traditional and gourmet 12 and 16-inch pizzas.
Weinbergs offers something for everyone, and quick service too. Limited seating makes it hard to eat in. But then, the beach is block away or there’s the sidewalk—welcoming you with the promise of a leisurely stroll, while you nibble on your purchase.
