Over the last five years, Hingham resident, Attorney at Law, and Suffolk University professor, John D. McCoy has been working with dogs — the dogs of “Doggity’s Diner” that is.

McCoy is the creator of a short segment in the PBS Sprout children’s show “Noodle and Doodle.” The show follows chef Doggity, and his three co-workers, Deedeldee the waitress, and Tony and Mack, who help Doggity in the kitchen. Each episode, the crew explores and prepares different nutritional foods to ease children into healthy eating habits. Together with Executive Producer John Andrews, Designer Max Miceli, and Culinary Developer, Barbara Kirschner, he successfully sold the idea to PBS in 2009, with a focus on the issue of child obesity.

“Television is part of the problem, and television can be part of the solution,” says McCoy. Consulting group, Kids Health, ensures that all the recipes are nutritional as well as safe for kids to prepare. By introducing children to healthier food at a young age, McCoy hopes the program can help kids live a healthier lifestyle. “It’s not just about cooking,” says McCoy. The show teaches life skills and respectful thinking as the dogs encounter different challenges in each segment.

“I get the same feeling of excitement and the same feeling of accomplishment when my Suffolk University students are placed in an internship,” says McCoy.” You really make a difference in a young person’s life and that’s what we want to do in the show.”

Doggity’s Diner airs on Saturday and Sundays at 9:20 a.m. and 11:40 a.m. on PBS Sprout.
